Subject: Foreign pool 2 - Women's entrepreneurship panel
World leaders, including German Chancellor Merkel and Canadian PM Trudeau along with President Trump entered a panel on women’s entrepreneurship that included World Bank President Jim Kim, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde and Ivanka Trump. Merkel was chatting with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross as the group entered and then posed for a group photo.
Merkel and Trudeau addressed the group before Trump gave remarks. Merkel said she was pleased with the work being done by the group in providing funds to female entrepreneurs in the developing world, saying it demonstrated that the G20 was more than a two day summit. “If everything went so quickly by the World Bank as the creation of such a fund, we'd have more success on the international stage,” she said in German, referencing a new fund to support female entrepreneurs in the developing world. She called for programs to help women to begin quickly with “good productive investments from self-confident women that are making their way,” adding that “without a doubt they can take their fate in their own hands.”
Trudeau announced a 20 million dollar contribution to the new World Bank fund for female entrepreneurs. “If we want to change the world we have to invest in women and girls,” he said. “This initiative will ensure we make the most difference ... in the developing world where we can make the biggest difference.”
"We know that helping women around the world is not just the right thing to do, it's also a very smart thing to do," he said, noting that there is also still a lot to be done at home to advance the rights of women.
Trump and Merkel chatted briefly during Trudeau’s remarks, with Trump smiling and Merkel nodding.
