Subject: Foreign pool report #1
The pool was ushered into the Oval Office at 3:07 and was there for about 2 minutes.
President Trump and President Santos were seated side by side in front of the chimney.
President Santos didn't speak.
Some quotes by President Trump:
"It's a great honor to have president Santos of Colombia here, we're gonna have long discussions. Colombia's been making great progress but we are working on knocking out the drugs because we have a problem with drugs, a big problem with the drugs, and were working very hard and very diligently, we're spending a lot of time together today, and I know in the future, a lot of time".
He said "we're very close to an FBI director" who will be announced "soon".
Also from Trump in response to a question: "We're gonna talk about Venezuela. What's happening in Venezuela is very very sad".
Some background on President Santos' visit:
He is here on a three-day visit, joined by his Foreign Minister, Maria Angela Holguin, and other senior officials.
This is his first visit to Washington since November 2016, when he had meetings at the Congress, and his first visit to the White House since February 2016. Back then, he met with President Obama and they announced "Peace Colombia", a new phase in the US assistance to Colombia. Most of the 450 million dollars requested by Obama for that program were approved by Congress a couple of weeks ago.
Santos arrived in DC yesterday and had a dinner at the Library of Congress, which was attended by several lawmakers and by the National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster.
Today he met with the Republican leaders of the House and Senate, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell, as well as with other lawmakers such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Tomorrow he will have breakfast with Vice Preisdent Mike Pence and meet with other journalists.
