Just before noon Monday, President Obama, Vice President Biden and U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, met with the former players of the NCAA 1983 Championship basketball team in the East Room of the White House. Many of the players' wives were also present.
A a brief ceremony, Obama met the wives and took several photos. He also signed a few mementos brought by the former players.
Thurl Bailey, former NC State basketball player, presented Obama with a #1 Wolfpack jersey, bearing his name. Previously, Obama had apologized: "Sorry I'm not wearing red." (N.C. State's athletic colors are red). Bailey responded, "We can fix that," and handed him the jersey.
On Hatch helping the team organize the White House visit, Obama jokingly remarked: "Basically if he asks me to do something, I usually do it."
