Dr. Biden Pool Report 1
Jill Biden left Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace hotel at 10:49 and arrived at the General Women’s Union ten minutes later.
There were red carpets and U.S. and UAE flags in the outdoor area of GWU. It was warm and wet because of rain earlier in the morning. The sky was overcast.
Dr. Biden entered a tented area where she met Noura Al Suwaidi, the director general of GWU. The press briefly overheard Ms. Al Suwaidi explaining, through a translator, GWU’s mission to Dr. Biden.
GWU is dedicated to empowering Emirati women and was founded in 1975 by HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, wife of Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the late president and founder of the United Arab Emirates.
Other Emirati women who attended the meeting in the tent included Reem al Falasy, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Maha Taysir Barakat, the Director General of the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, Lt. Col. Moza Al Shehhi, Board Member of FBMA for Women Sports & Head of Scientific Education Committee ICSW Abu Dhabi and HE Amal Khoos, Assistant Undersecretary for the School Environment and Activities sector of the Ministry of Education.
In the tent, Dr. Biden then walked over to women in traditional attire who were making handicrafts including palm-frond weaving and wool weaving.
After that, she exited the tent and entered GWU’s main building. There, she was given a tour of a room where awards that had been given to Sheikha Fatima over the years were on display.
She then came outside accompanied by Ms. Al Suwaidi. A young girl in traditional clothing gave her a bouquet of white roses. Dr. Biden hugged her and then the three of them posed for photos outside the building.
Pool returned to the motorcade and left at 11.29
