Subject: FLOTUS Pool Report #1

It's a rainy afternoon here in Manhattan, where FLOTUS is hosting an event aimed at highlighting the importance of educating teen girls around the globe.

The program, Broadway Shines A Light on Girls, Education, is being held at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater. It is part of Let Girls Learn, "a global initiative aimed at helping adolescent girls attain a quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential," and is timed to coincide with the 71st United Nations General Assembly.

In addition to welcoming remarks by FLOTUS, the program will feature remarks from Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan and Dr. Gertrude Mutharika, first lady of Malawi, as well as performances from Broadway shows and stars. Young women from Jordan, Malawi, and Pakistan are also set to share their stories. Stephen Colbert will serve as emcee.

In the audience are spouses of chiefs of state and heads of government in town for UNGA, according to FLOTUS' office. Your pooler also spotted a group of Girl Scouts, proudly sporting badge-covered emerald vests, excitedly cheering "Let girls learn!" shortly before the program began.

The event is kicking off now with a performance from the cast of "Beautiful." Highlights to come.
