19 July 2015, HANOI

Second Lady of the United States Dr Jill Biden arrived at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi just before noon on Sunday.

Stepping off a US military plane, she was received on the tarmac by officials from Vietnam’s Presidential Office and Foreign Affairs Ministry, the US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius and his partner Clayton Bond, and founder of the Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation Greig Craft.

AIP Foundation is an American NGO.

Also in the party were a group of five children wearing white kid-sized motorcycle helmets – beneficiaries of AIP’s Helmets for Kids programme.

The boys and girls were between seven and 10 years old.

Dr Biden greeted the children and spoke to them through an interpreter, laughing at moments and holding on to one of the boys’ hands.

Mr Craft presented Dr Biden a helmet with a logo of the 20th anniversary of US-Vietnam relations.

The helmet was manufactured at the AIP Foundation’s Protec helmet factory in Soc Son, a Hanoian suburb.

Hanoi is the second stop in the Second Lady’s tour of four Asian countries to engage government and civil society partners on economic empowerment and education for women and girls.
