A few more quotes from the president’s meeting with national security leaders on the TPP. As always, please check against the transcript.
“If we are going to be a serious player in this critical region of the world, then we’ve got to get the economics right, we’ve got to get the national security right. And that’s why all of us agree that the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement that we have forged is so important. And it is critical for Congress to act,” Obama said.
All of the participants at the table say that this is critical to get done for the U.S. economy, and critical for America’s national security, Obama said. One area of agreement is that if we fail to get a TPP then that void will be filled by China and our economic competitors. “So the time is for us to get this done,” he said.
“We are consulting closely with members of both parties in Congress and we strongly believe that on a bipartisan basis, we should get this done,” Obama said. “As soon as the 90-day review period is completed and the new session of Congress begins after the Christmas break, I am hoping that leaders in both parties and both chambers will move promptly to get this done,” he said.
The president did not take any questions, but wished the pool a “wonderful weekend.” As reporters were filing out of the room, Obama jokingly advised those who were traveling with him to Asia to “make sure you pack a lot. We’ll be gone a long time. I don’t want to see you in the same shirt every day.”
