Subject: In-town print pool No. 3 - readout of meeting on criminal justice reform

Background from the WH:

Today, President Obama, joined by Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates, met with a bipartisan, bicameral group of 15 Senators and Representatives who have been leaders on juvenile and criminal justice reform. The group discussed the important progress that has been made in the Senate and House on legislation that would reduce mandatory minimums for non-violent drug offenders, reward prisoners with shorter sentences if they complete programs that make them less likely to commit a repeat offense, and make important reforms to our juvenile justice system. The President thanked those in attendance for their bipartisan work on criminal justice reform—and consulted with them on ways for the Administration to work cooperatively with Congress to get a bipartisan bill to his desk in the near future. Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, White House Counsel Neil Eggleston, Domestic Policy Director Cecilia Munoz, and Cabinet Secretary Broderick Johnson also participated. Additionally, FBI Director James Comey briefed the group on the San Bernardino shooting prior to the meeting.
