Subject: In town print pool report #3
The president, wearing a blue checked shirt, and first lady, in an olive sweater, were in a room at the school planting raised beds with a few children as part of an MLK Day service event. The president remarked on the virtue of spinach.
Pool entered at 1:31pm and was in the room for less than a minute.
Background from the White House on the event:
The President and the First Lady are participating in a community service project at Leckie Elementary School in Washington, DC in celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and in honor of Dr. King's life and legacy. The President and First Lady are joined by White House mentees as well as members of AmeriCorps in volunteering with students at Leckie, a high proportion of whom come from military families.
In celebration of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative, the President and First Lady will assemble a garden bed, plant vegetable seeds and pack bags with books for those in need, including a copy of Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Things You Can Do that are Good for You!," updated and re-released last year.
