Pool report #2 Siem Reap
Peace Corps Training Round Table: March 21,2015
We were in a room at the Sofitel overlooking the ponds and bridges. At the table are Carrie-Hessler-Radelet, US Peace Corps Director, Cambodian high school students, teachers, Peace Corps volunteers and the U.S. Ambassador, William E. Todd.
Mrs. Obama walked into the room and shook hands. The Director welcomed everyone and said she wanted everyone to get a chance to talk, to comment, and make this meeting a conversation.
Alexa Ofori, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kampong Cham province who works as a Community Health Education Volunteer spoke first. She said she lives with a family and feels those sisters are like her own sisters. She makes it a point to talk with them about what they want for their futures and that it is important to keep the conversation going. At the health center she speaks to everyone--from young people to those over age 80. In terms of girls education, what is important to her and what she takes pride in, is that she joined camp GLOW (Girls Lead The World) and got to organize and help girls participate in empowering events. Last year she worked with 7 girls; she learned how to help them grow. Seeing them going back into the community was great.
She the asked her Cambodian counterpart, Sokkhim Ry to speak. She is a 12th grade student, attended two separate GLOW camps and is acting as a junior counselor next summer. She comes from a poor rural family but her family made her education a priority.
Carrie said it was inspiring to hear the discussion and that it was important to form strong bonds and friendships.
The pool press was ushered out.
