Medal of Honor ceremony in the East Room
President Obama entered the East Room at 11:25 a.m. for the OPEN PRESS event. Saying "it's never too late to say thank you," Obama presented two posthumous Medals of Honor, recognizing the World War I combat heroism of Army Sergeant William Shemin and Army Private Henry Johnson. Transcript of remarks to follow.
Just a bit of color from the room - Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., walked around greeting members of the audience and posing for pictures before the event. Some of the audience members wore caps that read "Harlem Hellfighters," referring to the 369th Infantry Regiment in which Johnson served. Also spotted chatting with audience members before the ceremony were Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough.
After the presentation of the medals, Obama walked out of the room at 11:50 a.m.
