Subject: Pool Report #1 POTUS-Amir of Qatar
Quick first take more to follow. Pool ushered in 12:44 pm eastern, ushered out about 7 mins later. POTUS and Amir each spoke, took no questions. From POTUS: He gave his guest an update on the Iran nuclear talks, they agree that Syria cannot be fully stabilized until Assad goes and "shared ideas" about how to achieve that "extraordinary challenge". From Amir: The President assured me that he is "committed" to advancing the Middle East peace process.
The president spoke first, highlighted that "the United States and Qatar have a very strong security relationship," are "partners with us on a whole range of security initiatives." "Qatar is a strong partner in our coalition to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL." "We are both committed to making sure that ISIL is defeated. We're re both committed to making sure that, in Iraq, there is a opportunity for all people in that country -- Sunni, Shia, and Kurd -- to live together in peace. We both are deeply concerned about the situation in Syria. We'll continue to support the moderate opposition there and continue to believe that it will not be possible to fully stabilize that country until Mr. Assad, who has lost legitimacy in the country, is transitioned out. How we get there, obviously, is a source of extraordinary challenge and we shared ideas on how how that can accomplished."
POTUS said they discussed Libya, Yemen, and that he gave his guest an update on the nuclear negotiations with Iran. "I gave the Amir and update and assured him that our goal here is to be able to verify that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon." US will continue to "press Iran" on a range of other destabilizing actions.
Amir quotes coming in next pool report.
