Subject: Pool report #2
Pool was escorted into the Oval Office at 4:34pm. Obama began his comments right away, on the two pieces of legislation he was about to sign.
Below are some remarks. Please double check with transcript.
Some remarks on the FOIA Improvement Act of 2016
"Freedom of information act is one of the key ways in which citizens are able to find out what is going on in government...Over the course of my presidency we've processed more FOIA requests than ever before and we have worked to make it easier and more transparent, putting more and more stuff online.... But... we're actually getting many, more requests for FOIA than ever before and so we've had go work out ways... To make it easier faster, cheaper..."
"fortunately Congress on a bipartisan basis has provided the tools to legislation to codify some the reforms we've already made and to expand more of these reforms so government is more responsive. "
Some remarks on Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act:
"we've got millions of our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico who have been suffering under the worst fiscal crises in memory and as a consequence of the inability for them to restructure their debt we see... basic services shutting down and govt workers not being paid..."
"we finally have legislation that at least is going Puerto Rico the opportunity to get from under this lingering uncertainty in respect to their debt...to start growing again. It's not going to be in and of itself sufficient to solve all the problems that Puerto Rico faces but it is an important first step on the path of creating more stability, better services and better prosperity overall."
"the people of Puerto Rico need to know that they're not forgotten, they're part of the American family."
POTUS didn't wrapped up his remarks at 4:39. He did not take any questions at.
A travel photo lid was called at 4:41pm. Have a great evening everyone!
