Obama makes his Iran statement
President Obama spoke from the East Room for about 14 minutes, starting shortly before 7:03 a.m. and ending shortly before 7:17 a.m.
The president defended the Iran agreement, saying it would deny Tehran a pathway to nuclear weapons and require international inspections for compliance.
"This deal is not built on trust," he said. "It is built on verification."
Obama also vowed to veto any congressional attempt to scuttle the agreement.
"I believe it would be irresponsible to walk away from this deal," he said.
Obama spoke from the East Room at a podium set up at the intersection of the first-floor Cross Hall. He faced a bank of television cameras positioned in the middle of the room.
Vice President Biden stood behind the president as he spoke.
Among the aides who watched the speech in the East Room: Denis McDonough, Susan Rice, Ben Rhodes, and Josh Earnest.
Expect President Obama to make calls to world leaders during the day.
