Subject: Pool Report #3
Background from the White House:
Today, the President is taking part in a discussion with Native youth moderated by Jude Schimmel, a former standout basketball player at the University of Louisville who recently released her first book, Dreamcatcher, in which she shares her experiences growing up on a reservation, details how she overcame adversity and shines a light on the struggles of Native Americans today. In 2013, she won the NCAA Elite 89 award, for having the highest GPA of any player in the Final Four.
The President and Jude were joined on stage by four Native Youth Delegates:
· Blossom Johnson, Navajo Nation, 23
· Tatiana Ticknor, Yup’ik/Tlingit/Dena’ina, 16
· Brayden White, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, 21
· Philip Douglas, Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, 16
The audience is comprised primarily of tribal organization leaders – each of the 566 federally-recognized Indian tribes across the country were invited to attend – as well as youth delegates, Senior Administration Officials and Members of Congress.
