Subject: Pool report #4 -- Obama signs energy efficiency bill
Obama has signed S. 535, the Energy Efficiency Improvement Act of 2015.
Pool was ushered into the Oval Office at about 3pm. Obama was seated at his desk, pens at the ready, surrounded by a mix of advocates and lawmakers. Among them: Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.).
Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz was also there.
"It is a great pleasure to welcome some outstanding legislators and advocates on behalf of an issue that should always be bipartisan, and that is making sure that we have the most energy efficient economy," Obama said. "We've made great strides since the beginning of my administration, on everything from doubling fuel efficiency standards on cars to incentivizing some other policies when we build buildings so that they're not wasting as much energy."
He praised the "coming together of Republicans and Democrats" on the issue.
Obama signed the bill, one pen at a time, and thanked everyone for coming.
As pool was ushered out, a couple of poolers shouted questions about Baltimore and about Bernie Sanders running for president. They got the customary response.
"Thank you," Obama said each time.
