Subject: Pool report about Jill Biden's Ho Chi Minh City visit

The pool was escorted into the Thao Dan Child Welfare Center at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday 21 July, 2015, Vietnam time. Jill Biden arrived at 12:38 p.m and was flanked by US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius, US ambassador at large for global women's issues Cathy Russell, USAID senior adviser for international education Christie Vilsack, principal deputy assistant secretary Scot Marciel, her sister-in-law Valerie Biden Owens, her Chief of Staff Sheila Nix, and US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Rena Bitter (as identified by the State Department). Biden wore a blue jacket, a white shirt and a black skirt. Le Thi Thu Thuy, diretor of Thao Dan Center, guided the group to the third floor of the center to an English classroom for disadvantaged children aged 10 to 16. The small room is furnished with pictures, a book shelve and a board decorated with the national flags of the US and Vietnam and a welcome remark to Biden.

Two voluntary freshmen of the Ho Chi Minh City-based University of Natural Sciences and eight students of the class told Biden that they were learning geography and history in English. The voluntary teachers asked the students several questions about American's prominent figures and Biden smiled when the students gave the right answers. Shen then asked the students if they speak English with one another and one of the two voluntary said yes. "How long have you been learning English," she asked. "150 hours", a voluntary teacher replied.

At 12:53 p.m Biden and her group walked downstairs to leave the center. 17 members of the center lined up singing a song to say goodbye to her. As she was walking downstairs the group almost finished singing so she asked them to sing the song again. Biden shook hands and said "thank you" to Le Thi Thu thuy, the center's director for welcoming her. She then went on shaking hands with every member of the group that performed the song. She took no questions. SLOTUS left Thao Dan Center at 12:57 p.m.

Biden was then heading off to Tan Son Nhat International Airport to leave for Laos and Japan. She had just flown in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday afternoon from Hanoi.
