On Background from a White House Official:

Today President Obama will be introduced by Tiana Cox before his Town Hall with students, young leaders and members of the community and Benedict College on how young people throughout history have worked to expand opportunity in their own communities.

Tiana Cox is a senior accounting major and a member of the school of honors at Benedict College. She has past experience with student government and is an exemplary member of her community as demonstrated by her many hours of community service. Tiana volunteers at DITA Tax Services for the Community, a no cost tax assistance service. She also volunteers at Hannah House Transitional Home for Woman, and is a tutor for college students, HS students, and elementary school students. She was her sophomore class president, elected "Miss Freshman," and second VP of the student government association.

About Benedict College:

Founded in 1870, Benedict College is a private, historically black liberal arts college located in Columbia, South Carolina. 82 percent of Benedict students received Pell Grants for the 2012-13 school year. In 2014,  Washington Monthly ranked Benedict 14th of 346 institutions in its 2014 Baccalaureate College Rankings, which consider colleges’ social mobility, research, and service contributions. Benedict College has strived to increase first-year academic progress and retention through its college-wide, comprehensive Freshman Institute. In 1995, Benedict College established the Benedict-Allen Community Development Corporation (CDC). The CDC has partnered with local stakeholders to develop affordable housing and to provide financing for small and minority-owned businesses.
