Subject: Travel Pool 8 - showroom floor, 'Get Shorty' reference
Pool was with POTUS for roughly 20 - 25 minutes inside the auto show and saw him look at three exhibits. Pool was back in vans just after 2:30.
First was the ZF display (details about the vehicle in previous report). Brian Johnson, a press officer with ZF, gave him the tour. POTUS also was flanked by Paul Sabatini, North American International Auto Show chairman, and Dennis Williams, president of the UAW.
Pool heard very little of the conversation between Johnson and POTUS, other than occasional bits and pieces from POTUS. He seemed quite interested.
Next up was the Chrysler exhibit. POTUS was given the breakdown of the new Pacifica model by Mitch Clauw, Fiat Chrysler's vice president of vehicle engineering.
POTUS was laughing and smiling while looking at the vehicle, and then turned to the press pool and said: "Beautiful. You guys remember 'Get Shorty,' right? It's cool driving a minivan."
Pooler recommends watching Get Shorty if you do not get the reference.
Next, POTUS headed to the GM exhibit. He was scheduled to check out the new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV (an all electric car). But, he made a slight detour when he got a look at a bright yellow 2017 Corvette.
"That one is juiced up a little more. That looks all right," POTUS said as he veered toward the Corvette.
His tour guides here were Daniel Amman, president of GM, and Patrick Foley, a Bolt EV specialist.
Pooler could hear very little other than POTUS saying: "Fantastic. That's a nice looking car," as he walked toward the Volt.
Pool was then escorted out. We're told POTUS would be working a photo line on the way out of the auto show. Also, it's unclear whether POTUS will, in fact, see the Ford exhibit mentioned in the previous pool report. Working to get clarification on that one.
Pool now holding in vans, awaiting departure for POTUS speech at UAW event.
