Subject: Travel pool no. 3 - gaggle

POTUS exited plane at 12:03, crossed Tarmac and greeted crowd of wellwishers.

Back to gaggle, which Josh was still conducting as we landed.

A few highlights:

Josh discussed the unveiling today of the My Brother's Keeper Alliance.

He was asked if there are any concerns re donations, a la Clinton foundation, and responded that the alliance is a private nonprofit and so WH will not be involved in funding questions. But WH is confident leaders of alliance will handle that issue appropriately.

"the Obama administration will play no role in setting criteria for donors."

Also, the participants in the alliance are "aware of president Obama's priority of transparency."

Re Texas shooting (Thanks Todd Gilman, who listened in, not on AF1!)

“There is no act of expression, even if it’s offensive, that justifies an act of violence."

“The president was informed last night of the violence outside Dallas.”

“We have seen extremists try to use expressions that they considered to be offensive as a way to justify violence not only in this country but around the world, and in the mind of the president there is no form of expression that would justify an act of violence.”

“We saw a pretty important and notable display of bravery on the part of first responders and …because of their courage the only person that was injured by these gunmen was a security officer."

Potus's appearance on Letterman will be his 8th.

On policies post Baltimore: as we discussed at the briefing last week these are issues that the president has been focused on for a long time... Even in those rare situations when the media hasn't been involved in them. Think the president's committment to these issues is a longstanding one.. pres has talked about how important it is for kids to be in good education programs...Concerns that are on display over the past couple of weeks--federal government is supporting a wide range of local law enforcement organizations as they seek to implement some of those reforms...we're gratified to see the strong support and engagement of the business community when it comes to the my brothers keeper initiative and alliance. There is also an important role for the Department of Justice to play. Mentioned Ron Davis and the work of the cops program...spending time in Baltimore... "

A lot of important activity but I also think that the president is mindful of the fact, as he said in the rose garden last week, that these are challenges that the country has faced for a long time. The president has both made clear that this is not just a law enforcement problem...repeated president's line that the nation has to do some soul searching.

Mentioned 21st Century Policing report.

On book: says hasn't read the book but says he's read the reporting on it...

Thank you to co-pooler Maya Rhodan of Time for doing second half of gaggle. And congrats to her on first AF1 trip.
