President Obama's motorcade left around 10:30 am for the village of Krün where he was set to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The motorcade passed through a few small villages where the police lining the road seemed to vastly outnumber the villagers.
Here's some background from the White House on Krün.
Krün is a traditional village of 2,000 residents in the Isar River Valley in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Bavaria. It was first mentioned in written records in 1294. Local attractions include the many lakes and hiking trails in the surrounding area, excellent cross-country skiing, the Rococo-style Church of Saint Sebastian, and the Reliquary of the Cross, a gift from Pope Pius XI in 1934 allegedly containing splinters from the Holy Cross.
