Subject: Travel pool report #6: Crowd count and beginning of service

A thousand people are attending the service in St. Anthony of Padua Church, according to Anthony Albence of the church’s event coordination team.

Before the service began, the crowd sat in silence as organ music played. At 10:39 am, the strains of bagpipes could be heard, along with some drummers. New Castle county officers rode Clydesdales to the church, followed by Beau Biden’s hearse. At 10:50 am the service formally began: since it is widely broadcast this pool report will not contain a detailed description, though some color is below and more will follow in subsequent reports.

Six pallbearers—Jim Biden, Jack Owens, Cuffe Owens, Frank Biden, Howard Krein and Jamie Biden—wheeled in the coffin. Beau’s widow Hallie and his children Natalie and Hunter followed behind. Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden walked behind, followed by other family members.
