Subject: Travel pool report A
A breakaway faction of the pool was taken to witness the APEC leaders' first "retreat".
It is something of a misnomer, as the meeting also took place in the Philippine International Convention Centre, which for those interested is a brutalist building commissioned by dictator Ferdinand Marcos (husband of Emelda.)
Inside a large, elaborately lit meeting room, 21 delegates were seated in alphabetical order (by country/territory name) around an annulus shaped table. Depending on your politics, most were heads of state or government, but there were also places for the leaders of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
POTUS walked into the room chatting quite intently with Ollanta Humala, the President of Peru and the next APEC host.
"Are you happy? POTUS asked him, via translator, the pool could not hear if the question was in context, or was an existential question.
Taking his seat, POTUS responded to a greeting from Prayut Chan-o-cha, the head of Thailand's military-backed government and designated prime minister, who was seated to his right.
Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang was to the president's left.
As opening remarks began POTUS leafed through his briefing book.
At around 10:45 the splitist pool was then ushered out, to be reunified with rump pool.
