Subject: VP pool #1

At 7pm the vice president and Dr. Biden entered the pool area, where roughly 100 guests of their annual Hispanic Heritage month were gathered – including Reps. Linda Sanchez and Loretta Sanchez and Labor Secretary Thomas Perez. Former MLB Baseball player Pedro Martinez was also in attendance. Pool played ‘name that congressman’ while we waited for the Bidens but didn’t immediately spot any other elected officials, though others were certainly present.

Pardon the single quotes – it’s the darn keyboard system. Pretend they are double quotes.

Dr. Biden spoke first. She recapped her trip with President Barack Obama to Warren, Michigan, where they, a week ago, travelled to promote the president’s plan to provide two-free years of community college.

Everyone deserves ‘equal treatment under our laws,’ she said, and deserves access to an education .

‘We believe you should have the education and skills you need to succeed without being saddled with decades of debt,’ to laughter and clapping.

‘Because it’s too hard to get ahead when you start out so far behind.’

Dr. Biden said, ‘We need more Latinos in the classroom period….so please encourage all the young people in your networks to consider education as a career.’

‘This night is in honor of all of you.’

Vice President Joe Biden took the podium at 7:11 pm and finished his remarks at 7:22 pm.

He had a lot to say about the Pope’s visit and the immigration rhetoric and ‘xenophobia’ of the Republican Party, particularly Donald Trump, whom he referred to by name.

Some highlights, with a fuller transcript TK:

‘I don’t want anybody to be down right now about what’s going on in the Republican Party,’ he said.

‘Folks the American people are with us,’ he said, encouraging them. ‘I know it doesn’t feel that way.’

The American people are basically decent, Biden said (it’s a favorite refrain of his).

Talking about education, he said what we should be focusing on as a country is to guarantee that possibilities for students remain.

He said by making sure the wealthy don’t get ‘stepped up bases’ the government could make sure that 9 million kids and adults have the opportunity to get a college education.

Back on ‘what’s going on with the other side,’ he said, ‘folks, this will not prevail. This will not prevail.’

He touched on the Pope’s upcoming visit, calling him ‘’the single most popular man in the world’ - not just among Catholics, but among people of all faiths or no faith.

‘Trump and the stuff you’re hearing on the other team,’ he said, taking a moment to say it’s not just about Democrats and Republicans, it’s about a ‘sick’ message.

‘In the meantime, watch the response that Pope Francis gets,’ gets Biden said.

He told a story, as he likes to do, about the Pope, and then finished with,  ‘And so folks, don’t be down. This is going to be a fight. But in the meantime, don’t be down.’

You gotta straighten us out guys.  A lot of you are wealthy. A lot of you are successful. Everybody has to do their fair share.

At the end of the VP’s remarks, Martinez joined him up front because Biden said he and his dog (Champ) wanted to meet him.

‘Run, Joe Run!’ attendees shouted at the VP.

‘Oh, no no no no,’ he said, brushing them back.

The shook a few hands before the program continued with a musical performance. Pool was then escorted out and off the premises.
