US Vice President Joe Biden has praised the "profound" efforts of Victoria's new billion-dollar cancer centre and declared the world on the cusp of major breakthroughs in treatment.
Mr Biden began his visit to Australia on Sunday with a tour of the laboratories in the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, flanked by Australian health minister Sussan Ley and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.
Researcher Sherene Loi demonstrated research into great cancer research during Mr Biden's visit, highlighting cells in the body that attempt to attack the disease.
"The big question is why do some breast cancers produce an immune response and some don't," Professor Loi said.
Mr Biden joked he had come to regret the "moonshot" label of the drive for a new urgency in cancer research, saying it was more akin to a "Manhattan project".
