It's an oval shaped ball, and you kick it.
The home of Australian rules football is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and if that's not confusing enough, a man dressed in blue on a hovercraft sped across the field before the game.
Mr Biden stood at the boundary speaking with local dignitaries before going onto the MCG to present the match ball ahead of the game where Carlton was to play against the West Coast Eagles.
He was accompanied by AFL chief Gil McLachlan.
Mr Biden attended the game with his three granddaughters Natalie, Finnegan, Naomi and was given a Carlton jumper (the man in blue is their mascot).
Mr Biden later sat in the stands wth Collingwood ruckman and American recruit Mason Cox, along with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, a former West Coast board member.
The VP had earlier delivered short remarks about Australia's military ties with the US back to the Second World War.
