VPOTUS swung by a downtown Burlington café on Friday morning to have breakfast with Sen. Patrick Leahy, Leahy's wife Marcelle, and Democratic nominee for governor Sue Minter before visiting the University of Vermont to discuss cancer research.

The Vice President walked through the doors of the Penny Cluse café at 9:40 a.m., surprising many of the diners at the popular restaurant.

He shook hands and posed for photos with many of the patrons, some taken by Leahy, an avid photographer.

Justin White and his wife, Jessica, were in town from New Haven, Connecticut, for a last trip before their baby is born.

He said he was not expecting to meet the Vice President at breakfast on Friday morning. White said Biden gave them fatherly advice.

"Hold them tight," Biden told the couple.

VPOTUS ordered a stack of blueberry pancakes. He then began circulating among the crowded restaurant to greet people, Minter in tow. Minter is locked in a tight race with her Republican opponent to replace Vermont's outgoing Democratic governor, Gov. Peter Shumlin.

VPOTUS left the restaurant for the University at 10:30, coming out arm in arm with Minter. He paused to pick up a nickel and a dime, joking it was a "donation."
He waved hello to the gathered crowd outside the restaurant before getting into the car.
