Vice President Biden's motorcade left the Emirates Palace hotel at 10:42 a.m. local time en route to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Mr. Biden, his wife and several family members are staying at the hotel on the leg of their trip in the United Arab Emirates.
Finished in 2007, the sprawling mosque is one of Abu Dhabi's landmarks. It is also the final resting place of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE.
Mr. Biden arrived at the mosque at 10:59. He was joined there by Reem al Hashimi, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, U.S. Ambassador to the UAE Barbara Leaf and Yousif Abdullah Alobaidli, the director general of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center.
A tour guide led them through the mosque, explaining its history and significance. They proceeded outside to the wide white courtyard ringed by four minarets before departing at 11:43.
