Motorcade departed the PG&E service center in Oakland at 12:19 for the estimated 25-minute ride down 880 into San Francisco.

The Bay Bridge was mostly cleared of motorists, except for one SUV driver who pulled alongside the motorcade and was quickly pulled over by three motorcycle highway patrolmen.

Crowds gathered along Front and Sacramento streets as the motorcade arrived at The Melt, a grilled-cheese shop, at about 12:50 p.m.

Pool held near the line and Vice President Joe Biden walked in, aviators on, and ordered the classic grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup. He was greeted by The Melt owner Jon Kaplan. Biden's tab was $9.91, and the clerk asked if he wanted to donate the nine cents to a local school gardening program. Biden paid with a $20 and asked for $5 back in change.

In line, Biden told the clerk that he may come back for an ice cream.

Pool left the restaurant just after 1 p.m.

Biden is spending the night in the city, but has no public events.
