Mr. Biden and Dr. Biden arrived separately at a military base in the U.A.E. a little after 2 p.m. Speaking from a hanger where hundreds of U.S. and allied troops were gathered, Dr. Biden said they are proud of belonging a from a military family and thanks troops for their service.
She spoke for a couple of minutes, singling out women ahead of International Women's Day on March 8. "Our female service members are some of the bravest individuals we have in the military today," she said. "You are trailblazers and your resilience and grit should be celebrated."
Mr. Biden took the stage at around 2:40 and spoke for about 15 minutes. He praised service-members for their sacrifices, and addressed the U.S.-led coalition's efforts against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
"We have to squeeze the heart of Daesh in Iraq and Syria so they can't continue to pump the poison in the region and the rest of the world," VPOTUS said.
"This fight is going to take time, but we are committed to seeing it through until we wipe out this evil - and we will wipe out this evil," he said.
He spoke about his late son Beau Biden, who died in May, and who had served in the Delaware Army National Guard. He had deployed to Iraq in 2009. Mr. Biden said one of things his son said he was proudest of before dying was his military service.
He praised the post-9/11 generation of fighters.
"You're the finest generation of warriors the world has ever known - and that's no hyperbole, " he said in his closing remarks. "Thank you very very much."
