The President spoke to packed East Room after Science Fair tour

With about 30 students behind him, Obama told the audience how much he enjoys science fairs - he once shot a marshmallow by the Lincoln portrait, has seen an alarming number of robots and said he heard there was a live chicken in the White House.

Obama noted today is birthday of Thomas Jefferson - one of the children of the Enlightenment.

Obama mentioned America's advances in science - from medical breakthroughs to the recently ended stay in a space station.

The event was open press- transcript to come.

The crowd included a crush of reporters and cameras from regional and local news organizations and science fair participants, teachers, family and supporters.

"The only trouble with the science fair is that it makes me feel old and inadequate," Obama joked.

He then described some of the projects and their creators, including Jacob Leggette, 9, who suggested that the president have a child science adviser, an idea Obama said he would consider.
