At CIA headquarters, Obama says there is “momentum” in battle against ISIS

At 6:40, when motorcade returned to White House, a travel photo lid was called.

After a nearly two-hour meeting with top intelligence, security and diplomatic officials about the U.S. fight against ISIS, or ISIL, President Barack Obama told a small audience at the CIA headquarters building, “We have momentum, and we intend to keep that momentum.”

Obama cited gains in the fight against terror in recent months – the 11,500 air strikes that have made it harder for ISIL to move and mass forces. The shrinkage of territory controlled by ISIL in Syria and Iraq. The destruction of oil supply and revenue. And the killing of ISIL’s leaders and commanders.

“In the days and weeks ahead, we intend to take out more” of those leaders, Obama said, making every ISIL leader realize when they wake up each day it could be their last.

But he acknowledged that terrorists still have the ability to carry out their own attacks.

“With attacks like these ISIL hopes to weaken our resolve,” he said, but that only stiffens our unity and determination to wipe out ISIL.

He also noted that it’s nearly the third anniversary of the bombing at the Boston Marathon and urged all to take heed of the message from the survivors and next of kin of the dead: Keep Strong.

Obama addressed about 60 agency employees in Langley, Va., in the headquarters’ entrance hallway. He spoke at a podium placed between a U.S. flag and a flag with the presidential seal with the CIA seal on a background of blue curtains.

In attendance for the speech were Vice President Joe Biden and John Kerry, Jeh Johnson, Susan Rice, Denis McDonough and several other participants in the meeting. See previous pool report for list of officials in the meeting.

The in-town pool was not allowed to bring their mobile phones into the building, and wifi was not supplied for laptops.
