WIDODO FOREIGN PRESS POOL NOTE
Pool ushered in at 3:51
President Joko or Jokowi as he's known at home sat to President Barack Obama's left.
President Joko says Indonesia plans to join the TPP.
President Joko Widodo: "Indonesia is an open economy. And with the largest population in South East Asia, we are the largest economy in South East Asia and Indonesia intends to join the TPP."
If Indonesia joins, it would be the fourth largest Pacific economy in Asia to join, leaving South Korea and China as the only bigger economies who have not yet joined the TPP.
And both the two leaders said they discussed climate change at length.
Indonesia is now consumed with combatting the forest fire induced haze that has enveloped parts of western Indonesia and is threatening Singapore and the Philippines with poor air quality. Widodo has cancelled the second half of his trip
to California in order to deal with the hazes brought on by forest fires in his country, which are particularly difficult this year because El Nino is robbing the country of its usual rainfall. According to the US Embassy in Indonesia, the US has committed 2.75 million US dollars to provide health services and forest fighting assistance to Jakarta.
President Barack Obama connected the fires with their discussion on climate change and the importance of committing to big pollution reduction targets at the Paris climate talks next month.
"One of the main issues we discussed was the issue of climate change, and why it's so important in large countries like ours work together to arrive at teh strongest possible set of targets in international agreements when we arrive in paris just a little over a month from now," he said.
