Subject: Foreign Pool Report - Bilateral Meeting between President Obama and Prime Minister Abadi
Your foreign pooler was brought into the room of bilateral meeting between President Obama and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi at 4:46 PM. The pool spray lasted 11 minutes. It started with President Obama's remarks, and then the Prime Minister gave a roughly 3 minutes remarks.
The Prime Minister called the terrorist organization Daesh instead of ISIL. First of all, he said, he hopes in the "next two months" Daesh can be driven out of Mosul, which is Daesh's last major stronghold in Iraq. And the attack to retake Mosul seems imminent.
Prime Minister Abadi said, retaking Mosul will be a "huge blow" to Daesh, and they must be crushed on the ground in order to stop the dangerous ideology they spread. He said, those who commit crimes have to be punished, but "we have to follow the rule of law".
Retaking this Iraq's second largest city before President Obama's term ends early next year is a priority to Obama Administration. So not only the President meets Iraqi Prime Minister before addressing UNGA tomorrow, but Vice President Biden will also have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister on coming Thursday morning.
