Subject: Out-of-town pool #5: community tour

After a ten minute drive from the airport, we entered a neighborhood with a stately brick sign at the entrance that read "CASTLE PLACE." We took a short drive through the community which has been rocked by the recent flooding. In front of each house, piles of debris have been tossed outside waiting to be picked up. Everything from toys to mattresses, to wooden furniture, to a violin that had been damaged - all of it told a story about what this community lost.

Obama could be seen in one driveway hugging residents. "How y'all doing?" he was heard saying more than once, saying, "I know it's tough now," and "I wish I was coming in better times."

Obama went into house after house, at one point shaking hands with a younger man who was wearing a face mask to protect from fumes. It's very warm, and quite humid and POTUS was sweating as he comforted families. He could be heard asking one family how high the water came up. When a man answered four feet, POTUS said, "that's why you gotta listen when they tell you to get out."

When he saw little kids, Obama bent down to ask their age and names. Sensing the shyness of a 5-year old, Obama said "Oh no, now come say hi to me!" He hugged his mother and they went to survey their home.

Obama introduced some families to their local and state elected officials. He could be overheard asking families if they applied for FEMA relief.

His remarks were pooled press. But after the press statement POTUS spent time with the family who allowed officials to hold their press conference on their driveway. He even taped a brief birthday message for them and posed for pictures behind the podium with the presidential seal. Your pool was ushered off as POTUS was being saluted by servicemembers and greeted by some first responders.
