Subject: Pool report #8 -- Obama remarks at Marine base
President Obama thanked the troops at this station as "the backbone of our alliance."
He mention the "risks and sacrifices that are part of your job" and said the country has to "honor all of those who have given everything for our freedom."
He said his visit to Hiroshima is an "opportunity to honor the memory of ALL who were lost during World War II" and to recommit to the "peace and security of a world where nuclear weapons would no longer be necessary."
It also speaks to the fact that "even the most painful divides can be bridged."
He told the story of Marine pilot Capt. Tessa Snow, who flew a mission to provide relief in the wake of the Kumamoto disaster. A family helped by that mission had a baby soon after, and "they decided to name their baby after Tessa."
Obama then worked the rope line for a long time, shaking hands with service personnel and their family members.
After this he will move to the helo for transport to Hiroshima.
