Hundreds of people of all ages lined the main road into the park to greet the motorcade. Young people waved and cheered. A man with gray hair blew soap bubbles into the air. A group held a big banner with a picture of POTUS and the words, "Welcome to Hiroshima, Mr. President."

Peace Memorial Park is a plaza surrounded by 30 acres of trim lawns and bushes. U.S. and Japanese officials are seated in chairs facing a burning flame and, in the distance, the iconic hollowed Genbaku, or atomic, dome.

After going into the museum, President Obama and Prime Minister Abe approached silently and stood before the memorial. After the wreaths were laid, they stood silently and then turned to shake hands.

At the podium, Obama spoke first, followed by Abe. The remarks are open press.
