Air Force One landed at 3:50 pm at Lajes Field in the Azores Islands
off the Portuguese coast.
The last time AF1 landed here was 2003 during a meeting with European
allies in the run-up to the Iraq War.
The weather is perfect -- sunny, clear skies and cool. The scenery is
breathtaking-- emerald rolling hills divided into small pastures by
low rock walls. The architecture seems mostly Spanish style, with red
tile roofs and white stucco walls. And the wind is impressive.
Windmills on the tops of some nearby hills are turning rapidly.
There is a small town near the airfield with mostly two-story homes, a
fat steepled hall and occasional majestic pines.
