Subject: Supplemental pool: POTUS arrival at Schloss Herrenhausen
At 2:59 pm the tall wood doors of the Schloss Herrenhausen opened, with the Beast pulling up at the foot of a red carpet shortly after at 3:01pm.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel walked from inside toward the vehicle, meeting POTUS as he got out just a few feet from the door.
"Hello!" Obama said. "How are you?"
The two leaders shook hands and POTUS then kissed Merkel on each cheek. They made inaudible small talk as they walked together inside the cream colored structure.
On each side of an overhang at the entrance were two sets of U.S., EU and German flags. An honor guard of German soldiers in long grey overcoats and green berets stood on the edge of the red carpet with long rifles pointed up to the sky.
Opposite the camera position were three larger flags -- EU, U.S., Germany from left to right -- set against a brick wall that rings the courtyard in a semicircle opposite the building.
The erratic weather mercifully was favorable most of the time, with the sun shining and clouds mostly clearing after intermittent snow and sleet earlier. Just as POTUS was en route light rain began to fall, but stopped again as he arrived.
Chancellor Merkel had arrived on her own at 2:25pm.
Some background on the location:
Schloss Herrenhausen was the summer residence of the Royal House of Hanover. The current structure though only reopened in 2013. More history here.
