Subject: Travel pool #11 --rolling to parliament

Pool loaded into the motorcade which was rolling at 4:50 pm for a short drive to the Canadian Parliament building in an area of the city known as Parliament Hill or Colline du Parlement.

The White House passes along this historic tidbit: The Parliament Buildings were built in the new capital of Ottawa - chosen by Queen Victoria - and were constructed between 1859 and 1866.  On February 3, 1916 a fire started in the Commons Reading Room which claimed seven lives and reduced all but the Northwest Wing and the Library to a charred shell.  The buildings were rebuilt in 1922 and the famous Peace Tower was completed in 1927.  The Centre Block includes both the Senate and House of Commons Chambers.

The streets around Parliament were decked out in US, Mexican and Canadian flags. Small crowds of onlookers along Mackenzie Street and Wellington Street. Motorcade arrived at the Canadian Parliament at 4:54 pm.
