Here's a quick update from Eric on Obama's monitoring of the situation along the east coast and Hurricane Matthew's damage:
From Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz:
Since leaving Washington, the President has received regular updates on Hurricane Matthew from his Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco, and he spoke this morning with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate for the latest on the storm's forecast and the federal response. The President reiterated to his team that all necessary federal resources be directed to help these impacted states respond effectively to the storm.
In order to hear directly from officials on the ground feeling the impact of Matthew, the President also spoke separately this morning with Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia, Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Governor Pat McCrory of North Carolina, and Governor Rick Scott of Florida. The President committed to providing federal support to help these states respond to the storm's impact. The President has already declared emergencies in each of these four states and ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal, and local response efforts.
As the President has said, residents of the impacted areas should follow the guidance of state and local officials and should continue to take this storm seriously. The President urged everyone in the potential path of the storm to monitor local radio or TV stations for updated emergency information. The President will continue to receieve briefings on the storm and engage his team to ensure state and local officials are getting the the support they need from the federal government.
We're still en route to an as of yet undisclosed location. More to come.
