Subject: Travel pool#7 -- Bilat with Pena Nieto
Pool was ushered into a bilateral pool spray with with POTUS and Mexican President Pena Nieto at 11:43 am.
From the vantage of your pooler, POTUS was on the right, Pena Nieto was on the left. The Mexican and US flags were set up beside the leaders.
POTUS spoke first, for about 6 minutes. He began by addressing the attack in Istambul. Please check against transcript, pool's audio was not very good.
"Before I discuss the importance of the U.S. Mexican relationship, let me just publicly extend my deepest condolences to the people of Turkey for the terrible attack that took place in Istanbul."
"It's an indication of how little vicious these vicious organizations have to offer beyond killing innocents," Obama said. "They're contintually losing ground, unable to govern those areas that they have taken over. They're going to be defeated in Syria, they're going to be defeated in Iraq"
"We will not rest until we have dismantled these networks of hate that have had an impact on the entire civillized world."
"We stand with the people of Turkey."
Moving on to the US-Mexico relationship, Obama said:
"We had the oppotunity to discuss the continuing strenght of our business, commerical, trade and people to people ties," Obama said. "The United States is not just a friend and neighbor of Mexico but the very character of the United States is shaped by Mexican Americans who have shared our culture, our politics, our business."
"All too often we're hearing rhetoric that ignores the enormous contributions that have been made my Mexican Ameircans and the enormous strenghts we draw from the relationship," Obama said
Pena Nieto spoke second for about 7 minutes.
"Isolationism cannot bring prosperity to a society"
"We have stressed the importance and the relevance of working as a team and standing together"
"We have agreed to go through security cooperation issues"
"We have to work together and we have to reinforce the efforts done so far specifically against drug trafficking"
"We have to be very clear about the benefits of being an integrated region"
"Isolationism is not a road towards progress"
"We are neighbors, we are friends"
"This friendship is based on strong cooperation and teamwork"
"Thank you very much president Obama for your friendship and for working as a team"
After their remarks, pool overheard Pena Nieto say "I will see you very soon."
