Subject: Travel pool report #12: "Now we just ended, or sort of ended, our primary season."
At approximately 9 pm, the pool was ushered into a large apartment where the fundraiser was being held (it was at least a duplex, but could have been larger than that). The apartment had marbled wallpaper throughout, multiple chandeliers and several large artworks in a variety of styles, from modern to classical.
Since we will have to move shortly, I will just include a few key quotes from Obama's remarks, which lasted more than 15 minutes. As always, please check these against the transcript.
"Now we just ended, or sort of ended, our primary season."
Obama detailed why this was the best period to be alive in America, citing the discrimination Muhammad Ali faced after returning from winning an Olympic gold medal in boxing, he said, "That's the good news. The bad news is that our politics has been a little screwed up lately."
"I'm here to tell us if we do our jobs, the country's going to be fine."
"I am concerned about us doing the hard nuts and bolts work of turning out people to vote."
The president noted that young people were crucial to him winning and staying in office, but many are now discouraged. "And those young people are still out there, but we've got to each them."
He said he wanted everyone in the room "to feel a conviction that this will be fine, as long as we do our jobs. But it's not a given."
The president also made a point of praising Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), whom he just endorsed for reelection, and was present at the fundraiser, Obama he "is on the right side of issues, is smart, is tough... I just want everybody to show appreciation for Jerry Nadler."
