President Obama arrived at Andrews AFB at 12:27 pm in a cold drizzle.
He disembarked from Marine 1 w daughter, Malia, who held a black umbrella and walked along w her dad. Smiling, she preceded him up the stairs w the umbrella, as he chatted w service members. He then walked up the stairs, turned, waved and walked in.
And at 12:33, we are preparing to roll for a three-day trip that starts in Chicago, with an official stop and includes fundraisers in LA and San Francisco.
Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz is expected to gaggle aboard Air Force One.
Per the White House, Obama "will return to the University of Chicago Law School - where he taught constitutional law for over a decade - to meet with law students and faculty for a conversation about the Supreme Court and our country's judicial system.
"The President will be joined on stage by his former colleague Professor David Strauss, the school's Gerald Ratner Distinguished Service Professor of Law, and he will engage directly with the audience, which will be comprised of students and faculty as well as judges from the 7th Circuit Court and other local judges.
"Both the President and his Supreme Court nominee, Chief Judge Merrick Garland, call Chicago their hometown. The President looks forward to visiting the institution that helped shape his dedication to the rule of law, the role of the Presidency and his fidelity to the constitution - to discuss with law students and faculty how he fulfilled his constitutional responsibility and presented the American people with an exceptional nominee for our Nation's highest court.
"The President will also continue making the case for why Chief Judge Garland -- and the American people -- deserve for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional responsibility and give this eminently qualified nominee a fair hearing and an up-or-down vote."
After the Chicago event, Obama is off to California for a series of fundraisers, including one tonight in Santa Monica for the DCCC. His remarks will be open, but a question and answer session will be closed press.
According to a source familiar with the event: Alan Horn and Cindy Horn will host a fundraising dinner at their home in Los Angeles. President Obama, Leader Pelosi and DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Lujan will attend. The event is in support of the DCCC and tickets are $33,400 per couple
He overnights in LA, and will hold a closed press fundraiser on Friday morning in Palo Alto before leaving for San Francisco.
The Los Angeles Times has more information on the LA fundraisers, w/ its "Essential Politics" newsletter providing these details: Obama will "start in Bel-Air for a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reception and dinner with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luj?n. There are plenty of big names among the guests of the event, which has tickets ranging from $15,000 to $66,800 per couple and is hosted by Cindy and Alan Horn.
"They include Julia Louis Dreyfus and Brad Hall, Katie McGrath and J.J. Abrams, Lyn and Norman Lear and Barbra Streisand and James Brolin. The money will help House Democrats as they try to flip some Republican seats in what many expect to be a strong year thanks to boosted presidential turnout.
"On Friday morning Obama will turn his attention to helping Senate Democrats, who have a legitimate chance of reclaiming control. He'll appear at a $33,400-per-couple breakfast hosted by Jennifer and Tobey Maguire in Los Angeles. The event has been described by the White House as a "roundtable" and is closed to reporters."
