From the WH, details from the inside of the Museum at Peace Park:

The President visited the display for Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who survived the bombing but died several years later of leukemia, contracted as a result of radiation exposure. Sadako is the inspiration of the iconic story, Sadako and the thousand cranes. The crane is a symbol of longevity in Japan, and ?it is believed that by folding one thousand paper cranes one can achieve long life. Sadako folded cranes in the hospital until she died, and to this day children present wreaths of paper cranes in the park in Hiroshima in her memory. The President viewed the display, and presented paper cranes to two local school children. After signing the guest book, he left two more paper cranes alongside his inscription.

The president did not deplane during the refuel. The pool has not seen him since departure from Japan. There has been no gaggle.
