Subject: In-town Pool Report #8
At reception for senators and their spouses.
Pool was ushered into the East Room at 7:16, past members of the U.S. Army Chorus in the hallway, along with Sen. Orrin Hatch.
There was a drum set and piano on stage and gold chairs with white cushions. Your pooler spotted Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul. Also spotted were Reince Priebus, Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer with his wife Rebecca, and Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster.
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen entered the room at 7:26 p.m.
"Thank you very much," Pence said. "You may be seated. It is a great privilege for Karen and I to welcome you to the White House for a special evening. As president of the Senate, this is very meaningful."
He gave a shout out to Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer and Orrin Hatch.
"And a rousing round of applause for the spouses that are with us," he said. "The first family is particularly moved that so many family members could be this evening. Karen and I are well familiar with sacrifices of public life."
"With that said, it is my high honor to introduce President Donald and First Lady Melania Trump."
POTUS and FLOTUS entered room at 7:28 to applause and music.
"Nobody ever told me that politics was going to be so much fun," Trump said as he took the stage while Melania sat down. "We are doing well. I just had long call with Gen Mattis. We are doing really well in Iraq. Our soldiers are fighting, and fighting like never before, and the results are very good, so I just wanted to let everyone know."
Then went back to talking about who was in the room tonight.
"I have some very special friends in the room....Here we are and, shockingly, it's bipartisan," he joked to applause. "A lot of people showed up. People we weren't expecting. I know that we are all going to make a deal on health care. That's such an easy one. I have no doubt that that's going to happen very quickly. We have all been promising it -- Democrat, Republican -- to the public. We are going to talk about fixing up our military, which we really need."
"We are going to be doing a great job. Hopefully it will start being bipartisan because everybody really wants the same thing. We want greatness for this country that we love. I think we are going to have some very good relationships -- right, Chuck? I see Chuck. Hello, Chuck."
"Again, enjoy these incredible musicians. I hope we do this many times. And, Melania, thank you very much. And our vice president, did we make the right decision with Pence?"
Pool was ushered out at 7:32 as U.S. Army Chorus entered and began playing.
