Subject: Foreign Pool Report--Japanese PM Abe in Oval Office
Pool was brought into the Oval Office at 12:08 pm for a photo-op.
When pool entered the Oval Office, POTUS and Prime Minister Abe were seated in two yellow armchairs in front of the fireplace. They were wearing dark suits, POTUS in a red tie and PM Abe in a yellow tie. Both were smiling but not speaking.
At prompting from Japanese press (in Japanese), POTUS and Abe shook hands, and POTUS patted the top of Abe's hand.
According to other poolers, POTUS said to PM Abe "You have a strong handshake."
POTUS gave a double thumbs-up and pool was escorted out. While leaving the Oval, your pooler heard POTUS say to PM Abe "They" or "We" (it was hard to make out) "have been looking forward to this summit."
Spotted in the room:
- Sean Spicer
-Gen. Mike Flynn
According to the Japanese government, they are all scheduled to join the meeting with POTUS and VP Pence (though your pooled did not spot them in the pool spray).
- Taro Aso, Deputy Prime Minister
- Fumio Kishida, Foreign Minister
- Kenichiro Sasae, Japanese Ambassador to the United States
Earlier in the day, PM Abe participated in a roundtable discussion at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington Cemetery. He will travel to Palm Beach this afternoon, where Prime Minister and Mrs. Abe will join POTUS and FLOTUS for dinner at the Mar-a-Lago, and the two leaders will golf together tomorrow.
