Subject: Travel pool 11 -- a few early speakers
Among the speakers before the president at the rally were HUD Secretary Ben Carson, who talked about growing up facing hatred.
"Our lives are too short to let our differences divide us," Mr. Carson said. "Our differences are nothing compared to our shared humanity and the values that unite us."
He said "purveyors of hate" want to divide Americans.
"We are much too smart for that garbage," Mr. Carson said to loud cheers.
Alveda King asked the audience to pray with her.
"Fan the flames of revival," she prayed. "O Lord, touch every house, every heart."
Then she led the room in song, "How Great Thou Art," again to loud cheers when she concluded.
Rev. Franklin Graham prayed, "We come tonight as a troubled nation. We're broken spiritually, we're divided politically, we're divided racially."
"We ask tonight for your help," he prayed. "We pray that you will heal our land... and bring us together as one nation under you. May we truly love our neighbor as ourselves."
