Vice President Mike Pence swore in David Friedman as the 20th U.S. ambassador to Israel at a ceremony in the Indian Treaty Room in the Old Executive Office Building. His wife Tammy stood beside him as Pence administered the oath of office.

Pence walked into the room to a standing ovation and talked about the

"If the world knows nothing else, the world will know this: America stands with Israel," Pence said.

"The challenges we face are many but our resolve to overcome them has never been stronger," he said.

Pencew mentioned that Friedman grew up with a love of Israel and has made more than 75 trips there.

"You've always been quick to rise to Israel's defense," Pence said.

Friedman noted that he was the first ambassador nominated by President Donald Trump and the first to be confirmed by the Senate.

"Those facts speak volumes about how highly the Trump-Pence administration prioritizes our unbreakable bond with Israel," Friedman said.

Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer was there, and my former AP colleague, Pablo Martinez Monsivais, spotted Jared Kushner in the audience.

A transcript of the vice president's remarks is expected later.
