At around 12:45 the press conference with VPOTUS and PM wrapped at Kirribilli House, each man took two questions.

Your pool was then led back to the adjacent Admiralty House, where a woodwind trio was playing on the lawn.

At 13:00 a ceremonial gun sounded from the harbor, taking the visitors by surprise.

Shortly after the Vice President and Governor General walked down a colonnade with their spouses and stood at the the corner of the building at the food of steps leading to the lawn.

From there the greeted in a group of around 150 of staff, dignitaries,  military officials and service personnel.

One of the guests, Michael Fullilove, gave VPOTUS his book "Rendezvous with destiny" about FDR and the war.

Once the guests had shaken hands, they milled about on the lawn with glasses of champagne, spring roll and little paper cones filled with Waldorf salad.

A bell rang Governor General gave opening remarks which was mostly thanks for coming and praising the alliance of Australia and the United States as tourist and commuter boats ploughed back and forth across the harbor.

He made a toast to the president and the people of the United States. He and VPOTUS then raised a champagne flute clinked glasses and took a sip.

VPOTUS commented on the magnificent view, thanked his host and the military personnel. He gave a brief summary of relations from the Coral Sea to Kandahar.

He gave a toast "to the queen" after her birthday and "to the good people of Australia."
